I don't know quantities of new notes printed, but 500m has been ordered - CBN Deputy Governor

UPDATED: DailySunrise had earlier reported that the Ahmad while responding to a question by a lawmaker on the quantities of the redesigned Naira note said she did not have the exact figure and so did not want to be quoted wrong.

The response which shocked the lawmakers has now been updated as Aishah Ahmad, deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says 500 million new naira notes have been ordered and would be printed soon.

The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in charge of Financial Stability, Aishah Ahmad, who appeared before the House of Representatives on Thursday has said she does not know the quantities of new notes the CBN printed and released for circulation.

Ahmad made this proclamation at the briefing while responding to questions by lawmakers on the apex bank’s cashless policy and cash withdrawal limits.

The deputy governor was at the house to cover for the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele who was initially invited by the lawmakers but had written to them that he was out of the country on official and health issues. Following a debate at the House, the the lawmakers resolved on Wednesday that a deputy governor of the CBN should appear to brief the House today, Thursday.

Her response on not having an idea of the quantity of the new Naira notes that were printed and circulated came up when a lawmaker, Sada Soli, in the course of the grilling her, raised concerns over the non-availability of the new notes, days after it was were released to the public and asked her to disclose the quantities of new notes printed.

But responding to the question, the CBN deputy governor said she does not know the quantities of notes printed by the CBN.

Aishah Ahmad was appointed Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the 23rd March, 2018. As Deputy Governor in charge of Financial System Stability, she is responsible for leading the effort to promote a sound financial system in Nigeria; one of the principal objects of the Bank as specified within the CBN Act.
