January 2, (DAILY SUNRISE) — The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has said it received with shock the news of the murder of its member, Dr. Uyi IIuobe by the relatives of his patient at Oghara, a town located in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria where his practice was based.
The NMA made this know on Monday in a press statement signed by its president, Dr. Uche R. Ojinmah.
Ojinmah, stated with worries the scenario being the response by the relatives of the patient who died from suspected gunshot injuries which he condemned as not being a justification for the relatives to resort to violence against doctors and other healthcare workers.
He also expressed disappointment that in a country where there is currently medical brain drain, the few medical doctors that patriotically stayed back to take care of our fellow citizens especially on a new year’s eve are now being murdered in cold blood by the same citizens.
Dr Ojinmah on this note called on the National Assembly to make a law criminalizing violence against healthcare workers as the association will be closely monitoring the murder case of Dr Uyi IIuobe.
